What to do if you lost your job? Advice from experts and steps for further self-realization

Losing a job: what to do?

Perhaps the most important things for a person are health, home and work. The loss of one of them can disrupt the happy course of life. But still, these components of our well-being are not equivalent. The hardest thing is when your health is lost. You can’t buy it, and even if you can buy it, the price is prohibitively high and not everyone can afford it.

Losing a home is a catastrophe from which it is very difficult to recover. So you understand that in comparison with this, losing a job is just a nuisance, although, of course, a considerable one.

What to do if you lost your job? Tell yourself: thank God that I have health and have a place to live. Don't get depressed, don't be afraid of the future. Make an action plan. And remember the popular wisdom that says: every cloud has a silver lining.

Day 10

Do you have daily rituals that help you feel better? Do you exercise, journal, read something inspiring? It's not too late to start. During this difficult period, taking care of yourself is especially important.

It is also helpful to write down what you were grateful for today. According to research, regularly expressing gratitude makes us happier Counting blessings versus burdens: an experimental investigation of gratitude and subjective well-being in daily life. .

Action plan

1. Find out what you are entitled to under the Labor Code. Dismissal must occur in accordance with the law, with all appropriate payments.

2. Register with the employment service. Here we will be given unemployment benefits and offered employment. If none of the proposed places are suitable, they will advise you to enroll in professional retraining courses.

3. Review your expenses. Avoid expensive entertainment, food and goods. Eating inexpensively often means eating healthily.

4. Discuss your situation at a family council. The support of loved ones is now more important than ever. In addition, perhaps your dismissal will allow your husband to feel increased responsibility for the family and encourage him to look for additional sources of income.

5. Tell the lender about your situation and ask for a deferment and renegotiation of payments.

6. Search the Internet for popular articles on how to properly search for a job, pass an interview, and write a resume.

7. Tell your friends about your dismissal and ask them to help you find a job if possible.

8. Review your resume, if necessary, rewrite it in accordance with the recommendations of recruiters that can be found on the Internet.

9. Send your resume to all recruiting agencies you find on the Internet.

10. Read job advertisements in the local press.

11. Post your resume on a job site.

12. Every day, review vacancies published on job sites and recruiting companies.

13. Prepare thoroughly for every interview. Write and rehearse a story about your professional path, experiences and achievements. Find out what questions are commonly asked in interviews and have your answers ready. Think about what questions you can ask.

14. Improve yourself professionally. Now that you have relatively a lot of time, take up advanced training: sign up for courses, seminars, read specialized books.

Day 60

Assess the situation again. If you still have no success, you may need to expand your search parameters. See if there are similar positions in other areas of activity. Consider whether you are ready to move to another city or country. Or maybe it's time to try yourself in a new field?

Even if you haven't been able to find a job for several months, don't despair. You will succeed. Develop useful skills. Continue to maintain business contacts. Apply for vacancies. Focus on what you can control and don't worry about what's out of your control.

Treat your search for a new place as a full-time job. Make an effort every day, but don't forget to give yourself a break. And be sure to remain optimistic, because it is quite possible that you will find a job that you love even more than the previous one.

Someone else's story

Alexandra worked at a newspaper. An experienced proofreader, she knew and loved her job very well. In difficult times, I looked for and found extra work. When the newspaper closed, Alexandra decided not to register with the employment service, but... to go abroad. That's how she ended up in Italy. For two years I looked after the old lady. I learned the language, saw Rome and the mountainous part of Italy. Having earned a decent amount of money, she returned home. By this time, her former boss had opened a new newspaper, where he gladly accepted Alexandra.

Fifteen years passed, and everything happened again. The newspaper went bankrupt. Alexandra found herself on the street again. It was necessary to decide: either to go to work in Italy, or to try to find a job for myself in my native country. My health no longer allowed me to do physical labor, there were no vacancies in other publications... What to do? Alexandra decided to try herself in a different field. And then an opportunity arose: a friend said that a company engaged in telephone sales was recruiting staff. I went for an interview, brought documents, got formalized... And things started to happen.

It turned out that she has all the necessary qualities for this job: a pleasant timbre of her voice, competent speech, the ability to persuade, evoke sympathy, and resistance to stress. Alexandra felt in her place. She is impressed by what she does, likes the team, she happily rushes to the office in the morning, earns good money and looks to the future with confidence.

I told these stories to convince you that losing a job is not a fatal event after which life stops. On the contrary, it continues, and sometimes it gets better, because new opportunities open up, turns in fate occur.

Clearly define future goals

It is extremely important to understand what comes first in the foreseeable future. Unfortunately, having lost their job, many people, instead of taking concrete actions, begin to rush around without results, committing outright stupidity. All this undermines the sense of balance.

When a person describes his own goals, it becomes much easier. Positive thoughts and reasonable strategies are formed, which potentially make it possible to realize ideas. Probably, now is the time to make your own dream come true, to do what you like most. Fortunately, today it is possible to take a wide variety of courses, seminars and trainings to improve skills and learn new professions.

New family budget

Now that you have lost your main source of income, you should not spend the remaining money as before. It is still unknown how long it will take you to find a new job, so it is better to immediately decide on the things that you will have to give up.

It's better to save a small amount for urgent expenses; you may have to spend money to get a new job. For example, pay for a health certificate or pay for additional education.

Unleash your emotions

A person who has lost his favorite job has absolutely no shame in crying to others for a while. At first, it would be a good idea to spend a few days completely aimlessly, feeling freedom and living for your own pleasure. Perhaps you should even quarrel a little, in other words, find an outlet for negative feelings. There is no need to pretend that nothing happened. Recognizing the desperate situation provides an opportunity to cool the ardor thoroughly. The main thing is that the condition does not drag on for more than a few days.

Don't lose your positive attitude

Losing a job is an unpleasant thing. However, the light does not converge on this point. There is always a lot of positivity in life that money cannot buy. It's about spending time with family and loved ones. You need to try to look at the situation from the outside. Usually, dismissal in this case seems like just a small shake-up, which makes it possible to radically change your own life. A man who has lost his job needs to try to free up personal qualities that were previously in the background, showing resourcefulness, the ability to communicate with others, and enterprise.

Studying the labor market

When looking for a job, pay attention to the following tips:

  • How often do you come across advertisements for the desired vacancy?

If the number is minimal, look to other positions that act as backups. Always have a backup option in case this happens.

  • To what extent do you meet the stated requirements?

When the application form indicates “age up to 30 years,” then you can send a resume at 32 years old. But at 45 it’s too late. Don't stroke your ego, look at things realistically. The requirement “at least 2 years of work experience” means that if you have worked in a similar position for a year and a half, then you are suitable. But if the experience does not exceed one year, you will receive a refusal.

  • Do you agree to the proposed salary?

Will you be able to cover expenses with the money that will be paid at the initial stage? All enterprises pay low wages for the first 2-3 months during a probationary period. This is fine. Please clarify whether the payment will be increased after? Or is there an increase in the form of bonuses planned?

  • Try to find out how many people are looking for a similar position?

It's good to know the real chances of getting the desired place.

  • Find out your competitors' advantages.

To definitely get a position, check whether you have enough knowledge and experience? Is it worthwhile to read the material additionally, or take a refresher course? Try to understand all the points.

Work with your own hands

Handicrafts and other mini-productions, such as leather accessories. Handmade can bring considerable income. You can make jewelry and other decorations, such as elastic bands, hair hoops, various bows, and hairpins. Anything, maybe woodwork. Pens, spoons, even make a wooden pistol and sell it.

Hand mat

You can make wedding or any other themed paraphernalia. Having completed such work once, you can rent out these products many times. You can try making souvenirs. Notepads with logos of organizations or photographs of people, branded cups, photo frames.

Let the money work

You can invest the money you earn in your business. Engage in buying and selling. Start small. Buy a few cheap items and try to sell them at a premium. You can find many sources for purchasing on the Internet. For example, foreign selling sites or domestic manufacturing plants.

You can work using the dropshipping model.

What you buy in your city from entrepreneurs is already sold at a premium. They buy it somewhere. For example, a regular jacket can be marked up by up to 70%. Find out where you can buy things without intermediaries. This creates the ground for you to act as a mediator yourself.

Interview

  1. You can't be late for an interview. Therefore, it is better to arrive a little earlier, do not make your new boss wait for you.
  2. Don't interrupt. Always listen to the end of the questions they ask you, and only then answer.
  3. When answering, try to avoid long stories. Always answer clearly and to the point.
  4. Don't show your worries and insecurities. Do not use phrases: probably, maybe, perhaps, and so on.
  5. Don't be afraid of questions about your salary. You don’t need to underestimate it in order to please the employer, this will have the opposite effect, and he will decide that you don’t value yourself.

Don't start your dialogue with a question about salary; rather, ask what new responsibilities await you at this job. The ideal option is for the employer to tell you about your salary.

Analyze errors

A person who has lost his job should take another look at his own actions in the past in order to avoid repeating mistakes in the future. By undergoing deep self-analysis, you may have to come face to face with your own weaknesses and fears. You need to be able to put aside such feelings so as not to have obstacles on the path to new achievements.

Methods for dealing with a job loss crisis

Every crisis and problem has its own solutions. Do not despair and turn a blind eye to the problem that has arisen in your life. You should accept it, realize its presence and not hide it. Find all possible methods to combat this problem and get rid of it once and for all.

The most effective methods for dealing with a job loss crisis can be seen below:

  1. An independent method for solving a problem that has arisen. You need to carefully work on yourself, your thoughts and goals in life. The first and main step is to recognize the existence of this problem. It may help to talk to people close to you who can reassure you and give you some advice on how to solve your problem. A very good method is to talk alone with yourself, you need to give answers to fundamental questions: is this problem really so critical? And why does it affect your life so much?
  2. According to statistics, the most effective method is to seek help from a qualified specialist - a psychologist. Thanks to the experience accumulated over many years, a specialist will easily help you find the source of your problem. Will provide individual consultation and necessary therapy. He will collect the necessary tests for him. And after that, he will formulate the right course of treatment for your problem, after which you will forget about the problem forever and return to normal life.

The specialist works at a convenient time (Mon–Fri 10:00–20:00). The cost of qualified assistance is reasonable. Payment is possible in cash and by credit card. Contact us as soon as you need competent psychological help!

If you have discovered a crisis of job loss in yourself or those who are dear to you, hurry to seek the help of a competent psychotherapist, psychological consultant - Andrey Filippov. Consultation is possible both in the office and online. The effect of the consultations is guaranteed (subject to full compliance with all recommendations!).

Stay on course

Temporary part-time work during the period of loss of permanent employment can be a good support. However, you should not lose your professional touch. At the same time, you need to try to return to familiar, interesting activities in order to continue to develop as a specialist.

It is advisable to create a high-quality, competent resume. Information about yourself must be placed on the most numerous job search sites. It’s wise to start every morning by communicating with potential employers, and then everything will probably work out.

Vacation

If you have already encountered a similar situation before, or you are simply a prudent person and prepared in advance for a possible dismissal, namely, set aside money for a rainy day, know that this day has come. It’s definitely not worth spending it all, but you can allow yourself to relax a little, it’s best to go somewhere with your whole family or with your loved one. If you have very little money, then you can just sit at home for a week and spend time doing what you love. These actions will help you survive the negative consequences of losing your job and gain strength to look for a new job.

Introspection

Now that you don't have to jump out of bed and rush to work in the morning, you have time for introspection.

If you made mistakes at your last job, draw conclusions. If you were fired, the problem lies not only in the terrible character of the director, but also in your wrong actions somewhere.

It is important to learn to find the positive in unpleasant situations, then it will be easier to adapt to various life changes. Self-analysis will help you understand yourself, realize the mistakes you have made and change your own vision of a particular situation.

Training and professional development

Job loss can occur for various reasons:

  • the position you worked in was abolished;
  • you have been laid off due to changes at the company;
  • automation - your work is now done by a computer;
  • you were fired due to poor quality of work;
  • or forced to write a statement using psychological pressure and intrigue;
  • There was an economic crisis in the country, which negatively affected the work of the employing organization.

If it is difficult to find a place with similar working conditions, you should think about changing your occupation or improving your skill level.

Many employment centers provide this service free of charge, although there are some restrictions:

  • training at the expense of the state is carried out only in certain specialties that may not be of interest to you;
  • Courses for the unemployed are held according to a set schedule. It is quite possible that you will have to wait several months for classes to start. That is, you will lose a lot of time.

BY THE WAY! Another option is to choose courses yourself at specialized training centers for specialists. Many specialties allow distance learning. Although in this case you will have to pay money, and a lot of it.

If you need a free certificate of completion of courses, we recommend visiting the INTUIT website. Here you can study in a variety of areas, although the main emphasis is on information technology.

March 1, 2017

Anel Yesenberdina Journalist, television producer, director of a documentary film studio. Screenwriter and director. I love my job and believe that dreams always come true!

  • facebook.com/uka.anele

Work is an important component of the life of each of us. For some, it is a way to satisfy their own ambitions. For others it's pleasure. But for everyone, it’s definitely a source of income. And it’s even more scary when suddenly your wonderful favorite job unexpectedly announces its departure!

I am a professional journalist. I was never a poor student: even during my university years I worked part-time in the media. After receiving my diploma, I immediately found myself in the state. And she worked on television in eastern Kazakhstan for more than 10 years. The author of numerous programs on ecology and children's topics, she even created the first educational mini-series in my region for those who want to learn the state language. With good ratings. Love from the audience, recognition. My work has always been highly appreciated.

A natural career stage is an invitation to a republican television channel as its own correspondent. Capital salary level, status, respect. Growing self-esteem. 6 years of success. But in 2011, the management decides to close news in Russian and reorganize into a national TV channel, which broadcasts only in Kazakh. The country needed one like this. But what should we do? Everyone in the Russian editorial office is being laid off. And I, a confident professional recognized by colleagues and management, suddenly find myself without a job. And it’s like a blow to the head! After all, just recently everything was fine. I lived for myself, worked for the good of society, moved towards my goals... And then someone else’s decisions change the situation radically, leaving me behind. To say that I was confused is to say nothing!

But this is what ultimately turned out to be the impetus to change my life and become even more successful. Learn to earn money and not live on one salary. Valuable experience! Today I already know that I can overcome even such a shock. But then…

How to survive being fired?

The main thing is to survive this period! Psychologically he is very complex. The questions are overwhelming: how could this happen, and even to me? The very best one - smart, competent, loved by her viewers? Tears secretly, so that no one would know that I, strong and brave, suddenly also cry... Probably, NOT SECRETLY it would be easier. But this is beneath my dignity, whispered a proud inner voice. Although now I recommend the opposite to others: cry, enlightenment will come. And let your family support you! I had to cope alone. So as not to hurt loved ones. Proud and painful.

What to do next? Don't betray your principles!

I took action right away. Even at the stage of receiving notice of layoffs. I had two months to find a new job. Just on another TV channel there was a vacancy for a staff reporter. And I was invited there. Also at the republican level, only the editorial policy is completely different. I was encouraged to look for scandals and intrigues every day, without worrying too much about their authenticity. Moreover, at my previous job I could afford to choose topics myself, look for interesting characters, and, at least, write the truth. I refused. Stupid? May be. But even if you are left without a job, this is not a reason to betray your own values!

Finding yourself

I started looking for other options. The main question is where can my skills and abilities be in demand? A couple of weeks before my dismissal, the answer was found - I agreed to become a press secretary in one of the government agencies. They just needed a person who knew how to write, communicate with the press, and organize events. It seems to be all right for me. But no one canceled the discomfort in my soul... From an influential, respected person in the region, I turned into just a cog in the state mechanism. What a blow to pride! The salary is also three times less. But the new job had one significant advantage - a free schedule. This gave me the opportunity to find myself somewhere else. And the documentary film studio turned out to be such a lifeline for me. I was recommended to the luminaries of journalism in the region as a good author. That's how I became a screenwriter. First one film, then another. Finally comes moral satisfaction, pleasure from work, which is very important! Today the founders of this studio are my true friends. This experience also motivated me to start my own business.

Getting fired is a great reason to start your own business.

Documentary journalism is a popular phenomenon. And working in a private studio just gave me experience and faith in my capabilities in this area. At the same time, we gained clients. People liked my work and recommended me to others. The moment came when I decided to make films on my own. And your earnings are already much higher. Moreover, my husband is an editor and cameraman, and we have a wonderful tandem. A ready-made minimal team to create your own studio. Small, homely, but its own. Fortunately, technology is now quite accessible. A powerful computer and several professional programs are enough for installation. We only had to buy a camera, microphones and sound equipment. I am responsible for the script and direction, my husband is responsible for all the technical side and design. When necessary, we involve other specialists. And we even learned how to participate in tenders, and most importantly, win them. Now our brainchild is more than 5 years old. We have regular customers, we are growing and developing. And they earned their first millions. Even if it’s not in dollars yet, it’s enough to buy a good car, an apartment and a comfortable life!

Master the craft and believe in yourself!

By the way, I finally returned to television. A year later - first as a freelancer for one republican channel. Then I go to the state, to another state channel, where I can also write the truth and be myself. This is my favorite job. And she found me again! Of course, I’m not giving up my job, but here I get the same recognition that probably every author strives for. As they say, a bad journalist is one who does not want to become famous and popular!

This is how I found myself. And now I know for sure that the ability to write will always feed me! Therefore, value your skills and strive for excellence. And even if you lose your job, don’t give up the steering wheel of your life and don’t lose faith in yourself!

Brief summary, or a guide to action from an experienced one:

1. Losing a job is not the end of life and not a reason to give up!

2. Allow yourself to be weak! Share your emotions with your family.

3. Look for what you are strong at and where your skills can be useful. They are your safety net. Develop your skills and abilities!

4. Do not agree to a job for which you may later be ashamed. Don't betray your principles!

5. Even if you had to agree to a vacancy that doesn’t suit you financially or doesn’t satisfy your ambitions, don’t get hung up on it, keep looking!

6. Don't be afraid to open your own business! Sometimes getting fired is an opportunity to stop working “for someone else” and become an entrepreneur. And your skills and abilities will tell you what area this business should be in.

7. And be bold in your dreams. After all, dreams have a good property - they come true!

The experience of losing my job helped me get out of the shell of my comfortable but small world. Expanded my horizons. Allowed me to earn money on purchases and travel that seemed unattainable with one salary. Now the whole world is at my feet!

Self-development #Career

Grounds for dismissal

The main reason for terminating an employment relationship is the employee’s personal desire to change his type of employment so that the new activity brings pleasure, material satisfaction and positive emotions.

In addition, you must resign under the following circumstances:

  • you decide to continue your education or engage in self-development;
  • you want to pay more attention to your family, hobbies and interests, without experiencing financial problems;
  • you want to take a break and rethink your life.

If you make a conscious choice to leave work, depression will not appear, and your mental state will be stable and healthy.
