- Examples of compassion from life
I once heard a story about a patient with a serious illness and the doctor who looked after him. Autumn was coming and winter was approaching, the diagnosis was disappointing, but hope still remained.
Frankly speaking, I don’t remember the details of this story, the point was that it was possible to get over this disease or the outcome would be negative, that is, if you didn’t hold out for a certain period, the patient would simply die.
So, the patient did not have much hope and it was really difficult for him. The doctor saw this fact, but wanted to do everything possible from him, he was doing his job, his professional duty.
Probably, this is also not only about professional duty, but specifically about the compassion that he felt for this person.
In order to inspire him, he suggested watching a tree through the window and said that sometimes something amazing is possible in this world. He drew the patient's attention to one of the few leaves that remained on the tree and was about to go after its brothers to become humus and earth. However, the doctor said something like: look at this leaf and if it continues to grow on the tree, despite the winter, then you will be able to survive, you will have the same opportunity.
The patient agreed and began to watch this leaf through the window every day. When he woke up, he looked there and saw how the leaf still remained on the branch, while the rest had fallen. This fact inspired hope and made me believe in the best every day, for many days in a row.
As a result, the patient survived the winter and recovered. He continued to live and probably experienced some positive emotions, and maybe brought benefit to others.
As it turned out, the doctor sneaked onto a branch at night and glued a leaf to the tree so that it would not fall off. He tried to give hope to others, he tried as best he could. He probably really cared about his patient and really only wanted the best for him if he chose such an interesting method of treatment.
It seems to me that effective compassion in life manifests itself in this way. When there is a sensitive understanding of another person and a method that can bring real benefit to that person.

Where does indifference to the weak come from? Sergey Frolov from Kamensk-Uralsky, Sverdlovsk region.
I was driving past a shopping center when I saw a little girl on the roadway. The man jumped out of the car and literally snatched the child from under the wheels of a gazelle racing along the highway. After calling the police, it turned out that her mother had been looking for 3-year-old Vera for three hours now. The woman left her daughter alone on the landing for a few minutes, and she went up to the apartment with heavy bags. During this time, the baby managed to slip out of the entrance and go wherever her eyes lead. The girl walked about half a kilometer away from home. It’s surprising that none of the passers-by paid attention to the independent baby, unaccompanied by adults, and sounded the alarm about it.

Unsung heroes. How “newcomers” saved children from a fire
New house
Olga and Peter, having learned about the sad story of the child, decided to adopt him. The married couple understood: a child with such a diagnosis has practically zero possibilities for adoption. In order to receive the status of adoptive parents, the couple officially signed their names, and they also made renovations to the apartment. The last step is graduating from foster parent school.
Lesha came to his new family as if it were his own home. At first, the baby could hardly do anything and was extremely shy. The father taught his son to swim in the river, and now Lesha is not afraid of water. This family is a real example of mercy in people's lives.
Mother Teresa's work
In 1999, on the threshold of the new millennium, Americans voted to recognize Mother Teresa as the most revered person of the century. And according to a CNN poll, she was more admired than Martin Luther King, John Kennedy, Albert Einstein and Helen Keller.
What makes her so special?
Mother Teresa, born Agnez Gonce Bojaxhiu and called the Angel of Mercy, was a missionary and nun of the Roman Catholic Church who dedicated her entire life to helping others. Today, when people think of saints, they usually think of Mother Teresa.
Mother Teresa
In 1950, Mother Teresa founded the Order of the Missionaries of Charity, whose main task was to care for the sick, homeless and helpless. In 1979, Mother Teresa was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. However, one highly controversial study conducted in 2013 suggested that Mother Teresa's reputation and saintliness may be somewhat exaggerated. She truly dedicated her life to helping others, but her homes for the dying sometimes could offer nothing more than prayer to alleviate suffering.
Mother Teresa died in 1997.
I dug up a car and saved a life
Last winter, when a snow hurricane covered the Rostov region, a tragedy almost broke out on the Rostov-Volgodonsk highway: a 50-year-old driver, getting out of his car, lost consciousness and collapsed to the ground.
“That day the highway was practically empty, everything was covered in snow, the roads were not cleared, but I had to go to work. So I went. On the way I noticed a foreign car with flashing headlights. I decided to find out what happened. An excited woman ran up. It turned out that their car got stuck in a snowdrift. The husband wanted to dig out the car, but when he left the car, he suddenly felt ill,” recalls Vitaly Alexandrov, traffic police inspector .
The traffic police officer was not taken aback: he immediately called an ambulance. He didn’t know how quickly the doctors would get there in this weather. Therefore, I decided not to hesitate: I carried the man into my car and went to the hospital. At a medical facility, the driver was diagnosed with a stroke. The patient was saved.
Vitaly Igorevich did not tell anyone about his feat. Modest by nature, he does not like hype around himself. Colleagues found out quite by accident that a real hero was working nearby. The wife of the rescued man called the traffic police to thank the inspector.
Why a person should be merciful - benefits
Everyone wants to live in a world that is filled with joy and kindness. The foundation of this is mercy. Showing mercy is not difficult, but it is very important. Why?
- A person’s mental and psychological health becomes more stable.
- Self-esteem increases and self-confidence arises.
- The person is charged with optimism.
- Heart rate and blood pressure levels return to normal.
- Hormones of happiness and pleasure are actively produced.
- Resistance to diseases increases.
- The person begins to look better.
- Life expectancy increases.
- The level of the hormone serotonin, which is responsible for feelings of pleasure and well-being, increases.
- The level of the stress hormone cortisol decreases.
- Altruism releases endorphins.
- The feeling of anxiety, causeless panic, and loss of strength is reduced.
- Expands consciousness, helps to free yourself from surrounding triggers.
How a merciful person becomes happy
Mercy helps to get rid of suffering to those who do it even more than to those in need. He brings himself and himself closer to the well-being of others.
True mercy involuntarily evokes honor and respect. This makes a person kinder and happier. Only by giving something selflessly can you come closer to understanding goodness and searching for your “I” in this world.
When comrades are in trouble
A police captain from Primorye saved a drowning man at the cost of his life. The tragedy took place in the Lazovsky district of the region. On January 27, 32-year-old inspector of the traffic police service of the State Traffic Safety Inspectorate of the Partizansky Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation, Andrei Polishchuk, was not on duty - a day off. He and two of his comrades, residents of the villages of Danilchenkovo and Lazo, decided to get out into nature. The dirt road was heavily covered with snow, so they decided to drive along the frozen Chernaya River. The ice could not stand it - and the car sank sharply.
Andrey was sitting in the front passenger seat and could easily get out of the sinking car. But he rushed to save his comrades. First he pushed the driver out of the car, then dived for the second passenger. But it was already too late - they failed to escape from the icy water.
The captain is survived by his wife, a 10-year-old daughter and a five-month-old son. As reported by the regional Ministry of Internal Affairs, his family was provided with assistance. The management of the department intends to petition for Andrei Polishchuk to be nominated posthumously for a state award.
Alexander Vozzhennikov:
When there is less evil
Mercy is very important for this reason...
There is a global degradation of morality. It's stupid to deny this fact. The crowd calmly passes by a man lying on the ground, silently looking at someone else's grief. If we do not stop the process of plunging into the abyss, then soon we will notice much more humanity in animals.
What do we have to do? Realize the scale of this problem. Then start with yourself. Go outside today and feed the hungry dogs. In short, help those in need. This does not mean that you need to give all your money to buy a car to another person or bring a bottle of vodka to an alcoholic. No. I think it's obvious. In general, by doing good deeds, we make at least two people happy: ourselves and, accordingly, the one to whom we extended a helping hand. Perhaps he will also want to do something nice for someone, thus starting a long chain. Get to work!

The act of the crane operator
In 2021, Tamara Pastukhova, a crane operator from St. Petersburg, provided another example from life on the topic of mercy. She heroically saved the lives of three construction workers. Risking her life, she helped them get out of the fire. The fire broke out in the evening on a section of the highway under construction. The insulation and sheathing of reinforced concrete bridge piers caught fire. The total area of the fire was about one hundred meters. When the fire started, the woman heard the screams of the workers - they became hostages of the fire that broke out right on the scaffolding. A cradle was attached to the crane boom, and the workers were lowered to the ground. Tamara herself also had to be rescued from the fire.
What is compassion
To begin with, it is worth understanding that compassion is not pity, which is a momentary feeling. You might feel sorry for an abandoned puppy or kitten, or a wounded bird. To sympathize means to live with a person in his grief, to share it with him. For example, a person who cares for his close relative experiences improvements in his condition and new attacks of the disease with him. His poor condition literally affects the well-being of the one who has compassion. This feeling does not require any payment, gratitude, it is free. This is a kind of light that comes from within a person and warms the one who is consumed by grief. The feeling of compassion must be absolutely selfless. And only then will it become true and sincere.
Christmas truce
By December 1914, the First World War had already claimed almost a million lives (and a total of 14 million would die in this war), but for one day - Christmas - a truce was established between British and German soldiers.
It is still unknown exactly how true this story is, and how much its details are exaggerated. But if she is to be believed, then the British soldiers in the trenches on the front line suddenly heard a familiar tune coming from the German trenches nearby. It was “Silent Night”, from which unauthorized fraternization between enemies began. There were no gunshots or explosions during the Christmas Truce. The soldiers, quite tired of the war, simply shook hands, and then shared cigarettes and threw canned goods throughout the Western Front.
Work of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
The work of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is not only a dramatic act of kindness, but also a dramatic act of charity.
Bill Gates, as part of a program he co-created with Warren Buffett, has publicly pledged to donate half the money he earned during his lifetime to charity. By 2011, Bill and Melinda Gates had already transferred $28 billion (that is, more than a third of their fortune) to the Foundation.

The foundation provides money to a wide variety of organizations to help solve global problems such as poverty and hunger, solve global health issues such as preventative vaccinations and ensure access to reliable medicines. The foundation, for example, gave $112 million to Save the Children to help at-risk newborns and $456 million to MVI, which is developing new vaccines against malaria.
